Benefits of setting passwords
Password security is used to prevent unauthorized access to the information stored in the system and the system configuration. When the setup password is established only, any user can access all the information on the computer except the BIOS setup utility. When a power-on password is set, the power-on password is needed to access computer setup and any other information on the computer. When both passwords exist, the setup password will be enough to access setup. However, the setup password will override the power-on password. When the Compaq 8000 Elite is used in highly confidential sensitive environment, the password security is an important feature to prevent unauthorized access.
Why password reset utility/feature is essential?
Password reset utility comes with Compaq 8000 Elite to clear the power-on and setup password, which are stored in the BIOS. Most common reason for resetting password is when the user forgets the password. If the password is unknown but someone wants to access the system, this password resetting utility could be used, for example, by a technical expert or forensic individuals.
Two different methods could be used for resetting password of Compaq 8000 Elite which are recommended by HP. One is by resetting the Password Jumper. Password jumper resides in the motherboard and could be easily identified using the motherboard manual. Resetting password jumper will clear both power-on and setup passwords. To reset the password jumper, first the system should be shut down. Also, all the power connections to the system should be removed, including the power cord of external speakers and printer or any other peripheral device. When the power cord has been disconnected, press the power button again to exhaust the system of any residual power. Remove the computer cover and locate the header jumper. The password jumper is green in color, making it easy to identify. Then remove the jumper from pin 1 and 2. Place the jumper on either pin 1 or 2, but not on both. Replace the cover, reconnect the power cords and start the system.
Second method to reset the password is by resetting the CMOS. This could be done by pressing the CMOS button in Compaq 8000 Elite. But this will not clear the power-on password or setup password. To reset the CMOS, follow the above-mentioned basic steps before removing the computer cover. Locate the CMOS button in the motherboard, press it and hold for five seconds. This will reset the CMOS to a default power-on password, which is 'admin' by default. To locate the CMOS button and other system board components, user can refer the Illustrated Parts & Service Map (IPSM) of Compaq 8000 Elite.
