Activating Windows XP
To activate Windows XP using the Internet connection, go to All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools and then click on Activate Windows, or in the notification area, click on Windows Activation. Then push the tab that says “Yes, let’s activate Windows over the Internet now”. Read the activation privacy statement and then go to the next step. If you want to activate and register Windows at the same time, then read the registration privacy statement and then go to the next step. Give necessary information about yourself, and then go to the next step. You can skip the registration by clicking ‘Next’. The wizard will establish a link with the activation server and then it will process the request. After getting successfully completed messages, click OK.
Transferring activation after reinstallation
After activation, you may need to format the hard drive for different reasons. Then you have to reinstall the operating system. Then you may need to reactivate it. But you can transfer the activation to the reinstalled system as long as you are using the same system without changing any hardware. To do this, go to the System32 folder of the Windows operating system. Then copy the files (wpa.dbl) and (wpa.bak) to a disk. After reinstalling Windows XP, click ‘No’ - not to go to the activation process. Reboot in Safe Mode. Then go to the System32 folder and rename the (wpa.dbl) and (wpa.bak) files - (wpadbl.new) and (wpabak.new). Then copy the (wpa.dbl) and (wpa.bak) files from the disk to the System32 folder. Then restart the computer.
When you will go through the reinstallation process, remember that product activation monitors the configuration of the system. Therefore, hardware changes will affect the activation files. So after major changes or too many minor changes, the above process may not work properly.
